The Goethe Institute graciously hired us to collaborate with Berlin-based design group Pfadfinderei for the grand opening of their Los Angeles branch. Drawing from architecture and Los Angeles-specific imagery, Pfadfinderei conceived of 8 large format (8ft x 8ft, 12ft x 8ft) light boxes to be backlit in their office gallery. The pieces also included slang in both English and German, to further highlight the cultural and linguistic focus of the institute’s mission. Lux Aeterna saw to the production, manufacture, and printing of the boxes. Utilizing aluminum fabricated frameworks, we worked closely with a commercial softgoods printer to replicate exactly what the designers had conceived.
The illuminated boxes were placed by us under direction of the designer in a “casual” display. Some leaned against the walls, others were mounted to the walls and placed above the gallery floor. The resulting effect was the perfect backdrop for The Goethe Institute LA opening party, and the office.
